Behavioral intervention plan or BIP basics

All special education students have an Individualized Education Program (IEP). An IEP could include goals to prevent discipline problems. The IEP can include a Behavioral Intervention Plan (BIP) to prevent problems in the future. This helps if a student’s behavior is disruptive to their learning or the learning of others. The purpose of a BIP is not for punishment. It is to decide how to help the student with positive behavioral supports. A functional behavioral assessment (FBA) and BIP can help the team understand:

  • The meaning, or function, of behavior,
  • What may be causing the behavior to happen,
  • Ways to change the environment to support the student’s needs, and
  • How to teach the student appropriate behavior.
