Child care assistance program basics

You may need child care in order to go to work or go to an education or training activity. The Illinois Department of Human Services (DHS) may be able to help you through the Child Care Assistance Program (CCAP). Children can get assistance no matter their immigration status.

DHS helps parents who work or take part in approved education or training programs pay for childcare. Visit the IDHS website for more info.

Who is eligible?

You may be eligible for help even if you don't receive TANF benefits. But you still must show that you need the child care help to go to education or training activities. Use this calculator to find out if you qualify.

Families remain eligible for assistance for at least 12 months. This is not affected by a change in income (unless income exceeds 85% of state median income) or temporary change in work status.

Eligibility has been expanded to include:

  • Youth in care who are parents, regardless of income or whether they are working or participating in Department-approved employment or education or training programs, or
  • Families receiving Extended Family Support Program services from the Department of Children and Family Services, regardless of income or whether they are working or participating in Department-approved employment or education or training programs.
