Child care, health care, and educational expenses

A court may order either or both parents to pay for:

  • Health needs that are not covered by insurance;
  • Child care that allows a parent to work or attend school;
  • College tuition;
  • Education; and
  • Extracurricular activities, like sports teams or music lessons.

The court can order these payments in addition to child support. The court will often order each parent to pay half of these expenses.

The court may order life insurance to be purchased to cover child or spousal support. This ensures that there will be money to pay support in case the person paying dies.

For more information on requesting educational expenses, please read Child support: requesting educational expenses from parents.
