Getting public assistance and child support at the same time

If a parent gets money from the Illinois Department of Healthcare and Family Services, (IV-D Services) and from child support, the State Disbursement Unit (SDU) will send the child support payment to IV-D Services. IV-D Services will pay the receiving parent either:

  • $50 per month, or
  • The child support payment, whichever is less, and
  • The welfare check.

This assistance is called a "pass-through" payment.

The IV-D Services keeps the rest of the child support amount. Suppose the parent stops receiving welfare from the IV-D Services. In that case, they should tell the SDU to send the entire child support payment.

Most public benefits, like SNAP (food stamps), TANF (cash assistance), and public housing, are based on household size and the amount of parental income. If household size or income changes, parents should report these changes to the public benefits agency.
