What are state IDs and driver's licenses?

State IDs and driver's licenses are both forms of identification issued by the State of Illinois. Driver's licenses permit you to operate a vehicle and might also list your blood type and whether you are an organ donor. What is required to get a state ID?

Unless you have a military ID, you need a Social Security card to get a state ID. You'll need a birth certificate or proof of immigration status. 

In some situations, the requirements for the ID are different. Learn about the requirements if you are experiencing homelessness or a youth in the care of DCFS. 

If you are currently incarcerated or about to re-enter society from IDOC or IDJJ prison, the Secretary of State can issue you an ID before your release if you provide the required documents and application. IDOC and IDJJ must assist you in applying for a state ID, including:  

• Help you get a copy of birth certificate and social security cards within 45 days of arriving at the Department if you don't already have these documents.
• Send an ID application to the secretary of state 60 days before you are released or when they have the necessary documents.

Why do I need a state ID or driver's license?

Unless you are an immigrant with legal permanent resident status, you are not required to carry an identification card with you. You might need a state ID card or driver's license as a form of identification in order to:

• Get a job;
• Cash a check;
• Rent an apartment;
• Get free tax help;
• Enroll in school;
• Get a bank account, or
• Get public benefits.

What if I just moved to Illinois and I’m licensed to drive in a different state?

You can use your out-of-state license for up to 90 days. When you apply for a new license in Illinois, you’ll have to give up your license from another state. The Secretary of State may issue you a temporary license that will last up to 90 days.

Driver's licenses, IDs, and vehicle registration

Most driver services facilities are now open. Many tasks can still be done online through the Secretary of State's website. Online renewals have been expanded for IDs and driver's licenses. Drivers will receive a PIN in the mail if they qualify. The fee for paying with an e-check is currently being waived.

Expiration dates for driver’s licenses and ID cards were extended until December 1, 2022. This does not include Commercial Drivers Licenses (CDLs) and CDL learner's permits. The deadline for REAL ID has been pushed back to May 7, 2025.

Beginning in September 2021, you may need to make an appointment to visit a facility. These appointments can be made through the website or the helpline at 844-817-4649.

You may renew your driver's license remotely online, by phone, or mail, beginning in September until the end of February 2022. You will receive a letter with more information. However, you must visit the facility if you are a:

• First time driver's license applicant,
• First time ID card applicant,
• First time REAL ID applicant, or
• Over the age of 75.
