Name, Title and Alternative Career

Emma Remy, Data scientist. Alternative career would be an ecologist.

João Caldeira, Site Reliability Engineer at Google. I did research in physics until last year, so that's an easy alternative! But a future dream career is one where my work helps mitigate climate change.

Jess Ray, Decision Support Analyst at the Adler Planetarium in Chicago. Travel and wildlife photographer would be my alternative career.

Why did you volunteer with ILAO?

[Jess] 2020 was an immensely traumatic year for millions of people. When a colleague connected me to ILAO, I was excited to have the opportunity to give back using my data analysis and visualization expertise. I find it really fulfilling to contribute to an organization I believe in and know is working to help others in need. My hope is our analyses are able to aid ILAO make updates that ease the experience for those requiring legal assistance.

What have you gained from your time volunteering with ILAO?

[Emma] I've learned a huge amount about the legal resources that are available through organizations like ILAO. The work that's done here is really incredible.

[João] A much better understanding of how to work with big real world datasets! It's always fun to learn new data engineering techniques, and I definitely needed a few.

Favorite tech of the moment

[Emma] The app Libby, for checking audiobooks and ebooks out from the library.

[João] Definitely jupyter or colab notebooks. So much of my work in the last 3-4 years has started on one!

[Jess] Tableau will always be my favorite at work. In my off hours, Animal Crossing New Horizons

Also thanks to Nate Bartley and Nupoor Gandhi who also helped out this amazing team of volunteers!
