What happens if child support payments end?
When a parent gets an Order for Support, it will have an end date on it. The date will be:
- On the child's 18th birthday, if the child is not still in high school;
- On the child's expected graduation date, if the child is still 18 when he or she graduates; or
- On the child's 19th birthday, if the child turns 19 when he or she is in high school.
If there is more than one child, then the termination date will be on the youngest child's 18th birthday, expected graduation date, or 19th birthday if they are still in high school. Parents should check the Order for Support for the date of termination.
Children 18 years or older may still get support from either parent if they are:
- Still in high school;
- Mentally or physically disabled; or
- Going to college
