In Illinois, you may need to get your car’s emissions tested. If you don’t, you may be fined over $300. This article will explain who needs to test their car, where they can do it, and what happens when you don’t test.
Do I need to test my car?
You must take an emissions test for your car if it is more than 4 years old and gas-powered. You cannot renew your car’s registration if you do not take an emissions test. The rule does not apply to diesel trucks, and completely electric vehicles. Motorcycles and antique vehicles (model year before 1967) are also exempt. If your vehicle is registered outside of Illinois, you also are exempt. For a larger list, see 625 ILCS 5/13C-15(a)(6).
But, only people in certain counties must have their car tested. If you live in Cook, Dupage, or Lake County, you must have your car tested. If you live in a different county, you may not have to. Check to see if your zip code is excluded from this law.
When you register your car, you should get a test notice that tells you what to do. Your emissions test will be valid for 2 years after the test. Often, the state likes to test even year model cars on even years. For example, a 2010 Toyota Prius will be tested in 2020, and a 2013 Ford F-150 will be tested in 2021.

How can I test my car?
You will need to go to a testing station. These are all over Illinois. Find the testing station that is closest to you. You will wait in a line. You cannot make a reservation.
What will this cost me?
The test costs $20. If you fail inspection, you will have to pay for repairs to get your car to pass inspection. This will hopefully be cheaper than paying the fine. Once you pass, you will be able to renew your car’s registration.
What if I don’t have my car tested?
If you are pulled over by the police, you may be fined. If your registration sticker is expired by less than 2 months, then you will be fined at least $50. If your registration sticker is expired by more than 2 months, you will be fined at least $300.
