Venezuela's temporary protected status 2023

Temporary Protected Status (TPS) allows people from certain countries to live and work in the United States. The U.S. can grant TPS to countries facing situations like ongoing civil conflicts, environmental disasters, epidemics, or extraordinary or temporary conditions. On September 20, 2023, the U.S. Secretary of Homeland Security granted an 18-month extension to Venezuela’s 2021 TPS designation. Additionally, Venezuela was separately redesignated for TPS for an 18-month period, known as Venezuela’s 2023 TPS. 

Individuals who currently hold TPS based on Venezuela’s 2021 TPS designation can maintain their TPS through September 10, 2025, as long as they continue to meet the eligibility requirements and re-register. 

Under Venezuela’s 2023 TPS redesignation, about 472,000 additional Venezuelan nationals may be eligible for TPS. Initial applications began on October 3, 2023. All individuals must apply by April 2, 2025.

Venezuela 2021 TPS designation important dates and deadlines

This information applies to people who currently have TPS or have an initial TPS application that is pending review by USCIS. Those with a pending TPS application or TPS-related Employment Authorization Document (EAD) application filed under Venezuela 2021 do not need to submit a new application.  

  • Designation date: March 9, 2021 
  • TPS designation extended through: September 10, 2025 
  • Re-registration period: January 10, 2024 - March 10, 2024
    • Remember, you must re-register for TPS yearly to maintain your benefits. The steps for renewing are the same as applying.
  • Employment authorization document (EAD): atumotically extended through March 10, 2025

You must maintain a continuous physical presence in the U.S. since March 9, 2021. 

Venezuela 2023 TPS designation important dates and deadlines

This information applies to people who have not yet filed for TPS and want to file an initial application. For TPS eligibility, you must maintain a continuous physical presence in the U.S. since October 3, 2023. 

  • Designation date: October 3, 2023 
  • TPS designation through: April 2, 2025 
  • Re-registration period: October 3, 2023 - April 2, 2025
    • Remember, you must re-register for TPS yearly to maintain your benefits. The steps for renewing are the same as applying.
  • Employment authorization document (EAD) auto-extension: None

To apply or re-register for TPS

To apply for TPS or re-register, submit Form I-821, Application for Temporary Protected Status I-821 to USCIS. There are instructions on how to apply on the USCIS website.
